Want your charity dollars to really work? Tired of hearing about fat charities with large administration costs? This is truly a good cause where your donation (or volunteer time) will do great things.
La Fundación Humanitaria Costarricense (The Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation) was formed in 1997 by Gail Nystrom, a native of the United States, focusing on education, community development, primary and preventive health care, and extensive support services for women and at-risk children.
The Foundation is currently involved in more than 50 projects aimed at improving the quality of life for target groups and foster a greater sensitivity and awareness in populations providing services.
This foundation includes Costa Rica volunteer programs to help people in great need. Just a few of the projects your donation can support include :
- Street Kids
- The Miracle
- School 2 Escuela
Children living on the streets in San José are trapped in a vicious cycle of drug-abuse, crime, and violence. These children are helped by providing housing, food, clothing, therapy, and education.
Thousands of Costa Rican women are raising their children alone in impoverished communities. The El Milagro (The Miracle) project is a dream shared by eighty women to purchase a plot of land to build modest homes for homeless families.
Rural public schools in Costa Rica cannot afford to make infrastructure improvements or offer essential educational programs to their students. Clothing, educational materials, and building improvements are funded by donations and volunteers helping teach English and other special classes to rural kids.
All donations to the Foundation are tax deductible and are sure to actually help people rather than fund big organizations.
The foundation has a website that includes more information, how you can donate time or money, and more information about Gail Nystrom and her work.
