Thinking about a visit around Christmas?

Christmas traditions in Costa Rica include decoration of homes and cypress trees, cooking of traditional food like tamales, and parties.

The season begins with the Festival de la Luz, which kicks off the holiday, and ending on the 6th of January, the day the three wise men found Jesus.

Travel tip
Traveling during any holiday season in the country requires more patience as a tourist since the locals take all of their holiday's seriously. Decorations abound around the country and fun events can be found in San Jose including visiting the decorative tree at the Children's National hospital.

Christmas in Costa Rica

For the kids
Another Christmas tradition in Costa Rica is that Santa Claus doesn't bring gifts to the children, baby Jesus does on the night before Christmas ( La Noche Buena ).

Bull fights
Bull fighting in the country is practiced throughout the year and is part of the holiday season. The good news is that the bull is never harmed during these events, but is simply teased by brave souls that are allowed to perform without training of any sort!

Religion
Almost all Tico's are Catholic and follow local traditions that include worship services and traditional dinners the night before Christmas with family. The season is considered a time of renewal and hope for the coming year.
