Costa Rica bus Schedule
Costa Rica's public bus system is an efficient and cheap way to see the country. While a bit short on creature comforts, it actually operates on schedule and with great reliability.
There are two types of routes these buses provide service for. "Directo" or nonstop service and "corriento" slower buses that have many scheduled stops between destinations.
These large buses vary in age and condition, and are frequented by Tico's since it is the cheapest way to get around in the country. Transportation anywhere is under USD.
Additional charges are applicable for large luggage items like surf boards.
At the Alajuela (San Jose) airport the bus stop is right in front of the terminal and travels downtown to Avenida 2 between Calle 12 and 14 north of La Merced park, fare $.60 USD. Close to dark, and at night spend the money for a taxi.
Buses stop at different locations around the country. It is necessary to find the right bus stop to get on the right bus. Some bus stops, like at the long gone Coca-Cola plant are less than safe at night. If you need to catch a public bus here is a page with the complete schedule.
Taxi's are cheap and convenient for moving short distances in Costa Rica. Many taxi's operate without the use of their meter. There are hundreds of "unmarked" taxi's operating all over the country.
Always either agree on the price before entering the taxi or ensure that the taxi is using the meter and standard rates.
Some taxi drivers speak English but many do not. Ask your hotel to find someone with English if you need it. Dollars or Colones are acceptable but I prefer to use Colones to control the "conversion rate" on the change I get since if you pay in dollars, your change will be in colones.
Many hotel owners can help you establish a reasonable cost for the trip you intend to embark on as well as help you get picked up by a reputable driver.
