Costa Rica is called the Switzerland of the Americas. Switzerland is a little smaller in size and a whole lot colder! I suppose the comparison must come from the mountain ranges found in Costa Rica. The comparison otherwise, is to me, a little odd.

The rugged beauty of the mountains, mystical cloud and rain forests, and tremendous differences in climate certainly make travel to Costa Rica a travelers paradise. Whatever you like, you will find it here (except snow!).

Beautiful pink, white, and black shell beaches are spread throughout the country. Some beaches have calm waters perfect for kids, splashing around, and sunning. Other beaches have significant riptides, rough surf, and thus are popular locations for surfing and various water sports.

Want a Secluded Nature Beach? No problem. Want a beach with world class accommodations? Easy. Our Costa Rica beaches page will help you identify areas around the country that can provide what you are looking for to ensure fun Costa Rica travel.

Costa Rica Budget Vacations

Summer in Costa Rica starts in December ending in February. The dry season lasts through March into April. Travel to Costa Rica is peaking in December through February generally speaking. Winter (more rain but warm all the time!) starts in June and lasts through August. The wet season means more rain in most parts of the country. Generally this means brilliant sunshine to begin the day with clouds rolling in and showers in the afternoon and perhaps at night.

The time of year you travel to Costa Rica, and what you want to do, should be part of the decision you make regarding where you plan to stay in the country. The northwest portion of Costa Rica (Guanacaste province) is the driest area in the country and features some of the prettiest beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes, and rain-forests.

Travel to Costa Rica during the winter doesn't mean you will be cold. It gets chilly in the highest mountain peaks all year round at night but warms up nicely during the day.

Poas volcano pictureWant to see an active volcano surrounded by gorgeous lush rain-forest? Costa Rica travel provides six active volcanoes and over 110 volcanic craters spread throughout the mountain ranges in the country.

Costa Rica volcano's include my favorite, Arenal volcano, which features soothing hot springs where you can order drinks and soak in the warmth of clean hot springs, gorgeous waterfalls surrounded by rain-forests featuring birds and animals of many types, or a canopy tour whisking you along a zip line (if you are the adventurous type) or in an aerial tram for a seated experience. Our tours page provides additional information about the eco-system and activities available in and around Costa Rica's rain-forests and cloud forests.
