Jaco Costa Rica is located
about 2 1/2 hours from San Jose, the capital city, on the central
Pacific coastline. It is the largest city on the Pacific
side and is known for its nightlife.
Jaco does have a criminal element, plenty of noise
until late at night in the downtown area, and a lot of bars and
restaurants to compliment banks, food stores, DHL shipping offices and
more.
The southern end of Jaco is my favorite. It is very quiet and
easy to find lodging that is more family oriented. The beach in
Jaco Costa Rica is good for beginner surfers due to its small to medium sized
waves and sandy bottom.
The sand is a dark volcanic brown and is
not the prettiest in Costa Rica by far.
The water is always warm and the people at the beach are
friendly. There are a number of surf schools in the area and
plenty of independent instructors operating out of their
vehicles.
Playa Hermosa, the next beach south of Jaco is the
place to go for bigger waves and more thrilling action for accomplished
surfers.
There are a couple of canopy tours in the Jaco Costa
Rica area. This picture was taken at the Waterfall Canopy
tour. The name is a bit misleading since you simply walk by a
really small waterfall on the way to the platforms. It is a good
time though.
Camping in Costa Rica is available in many
places. In Jaco, at the southern tip of the beach the camp
ground pictured above is always a busy place for budget
travelers. There are a number of places to eat in Jaco but one of
my favorites for breakfast is the Sunrise Cafe pictured above.
The downtown area of Jaco is really no place for
children or even teenagers after dark. There is a drug element and plenty of working girls
around at night.
The Monkey Bar is popular with the Ticos for
dancing and drinking while the Beatle Bar is the place for male tourists
looking for a good time....
