Playa Grande is a beautiful beach that features surfing, turtles, and solitude just north of Tamarindo in the Guanacaste province. From Tamarindo an $.80 five minute boat ride across the estuary is the quick and easy way to enjoy an afternoon. The drive from Tamarindo is a 45 minute pot hole filled trip past the small hamlet of the same name.

There are some hotels in the area as well as beautiful houses for rent right on the beachfront. Food stores, banks, and other commerce is quite a distance from the beach so food is generally found at the local hotels. Just north of here is Playa Ventanas, a pristine secluded nature beach featuring tidepools for calm water activities.

Night tours are available October 15 - February 15 each year to experience the nesting sea turtles. October - March is giant leatherback nesting season (highly recommended). The beach at Playa Grande is open all year during the day but closed at 6:00pm until 6:00am except during the above mentioned night tour season.
